Expanding educational opportunities in Science and Engineering - 
			Mexico's pledge to the Americas

Students of the Americas wishing to pursue a master's or doctoral degree in science and engineering now have a new opportunity offered by the government of Mexico in cooperation with the OAS. On July 17, the Mexican National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT) and the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) signed an agreement with the OAS-SEDI to provide 600 scholarships that seek to promote innovation and competitiveness in the region.

OAS-WTO: 16 Years Building Trade Capacity in the Americas

Since 1998, the OAS has partnered with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and, since 2006, with the George Washington University Law School in offering the “Advanced Training Course for Government Officials on Multilateral and Regional Trade Issues for the Americas”. Sixteen years after its inception, the course continues to be a unique source for strengthening the institutional capacity of Latin American governments in the area of trade. Among the 600 + alumni to date, a significant number have been promoted to higher-level positions and many have served their countries as chief trade negotiators, vice ministers and even ministers.

Payments for Environmental Services (PES), a tool for the conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems

The loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystems have accelerated in recent years worldwide. This threat can also represent an opportunity for a region as rich in natural resources as Latin America and the Caribbean through the implementation of innovative tools such as Payments for Environmental Services (PES). The PSE mechanism is increasingly being used in countries in the region as a way to recognize the value of natural resources and to provide an effective means for the long term conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems.

Tourism remains a major economic driver in the Caribbean and small local hotels are critical to the sector, providing authentic experiences to visitors and offering essential employment opportunities for the local community. The OAS-SEDI though the Department of Economic and Social Development and its program Tourism Enterprise Network (STEN), is undertaking a series of National Training Workshops for Owners and Operators of Small Hotels in the countries of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) focusing on Achieving Service and Business Excellence.

The OAS-SEDI, through its Department of Economic and Social Development and Haiti’s Tourism Ministry signed a partnership agreement to promote the tourism sector as a vehicle for improving socioeconomic development in the country.
