OAS programs in member states continue to play an important role in the long term goal to reduce poverty and advance sustainable and inclusive development in the Americas. Confronting the Challenge of Rapid Urbanization in the Americas
Latin America and the Caribbean is the second most urbanized region on the planet, having gone from a 62% urbanization rate in 1980 to 82% in 2012 (IDB, 2012). The unprecedented increase of urban populations found most cities unprepared, often resulting in insufficient public services, inadequate infrastructure, and growing pressure on the environment.

The region explores the potential of educational innovation and ICT use in Colombia
Education has been fundamentally transformed by the use of Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs). Since 2001, Virtual Educa has provided a space to showcase innovations, share experiences and train educators and students in the use of an array of techniques. This year, the event was held in Medellin, Colombia, from 17 to 21 June, and was organized by the Ministry of National Education (MEN) of Colombia, the OAS and the General Secretariat of Virtual Educa.

Panama Selects Infrastructure and Technology as Theme of the 7th Americas Competitiveness Forum
Despite years of rapid economic growth in many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), recent competitiveness rankings reveal persisting gaps between the region and more advanced economies. According to the latest
Global Competitiveness Report (WEF, 2013), out of 144 ranked economies, only four countries in LAC make the “top 50” (Chile, Barbados, Panama and Brazil) and although progress has been made in some countries, the LAC region falls short of other competing developing regions, particularly Asia.

OAS and UWI join forces to strengthen Social Protection Capacity in the Caribbean

The COIMBRA group of universities in Brazil agreed to provide over
300 academic scholarships to be offered to citizens of OAS member states to pursue Masters and PhD degrees in Brazil during 2014.
