Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas

Panama

Project Background

In August 2013, the Ministry of Trade and Industries (MICI) of Panama requested that the country be able to participate in the Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA) program. Along with the country’s participation in the program the MICI asked that the Organization of American States (OAS) supports the Industrial Union of Panama (SIP) in order to develop a Panama Green Label (Sello Panamá Verde).

The Panama Green Label initiative is led primarily by the SIP, along with the National Counsel for the Private Company (CONEP) with the objective to incentive those companies that continually show good practices in terms of energy efficiency, solid waste management and water management.

The SIP, along with MICI, the National Environmental Authority (ANAM) and CONEP also requested technical assistance from the Department of Sustainable Development of the OAS (DSD/OAS) to include the parameters and principles of Closed Looped Cycle Production as an integral part of the Green Panama Label framework. CLCP will not only focus on improving energy efficiency, but will also rationalize the effective use of primary materials and resources, gradually eliminate the concept of waste, reduce and/or eliminate greenhouse gases, achieve sustainable water management, and incentivize social responsibility, with a fundamental emphasis on products’ sustainable design.

Project Description

After completing two official missions to the country, the OAS identified the areas of collaboration and technical assistance that it will provide to the SIP and other actors involved in the development of the project in Panama. This proposal involves the following phases:

Phase I: Preparation and identification of needs

Phase II: Education on CLCP and Cradle to Cradle® (C2C);

Phase III: Pilot project

Phase IV: Creation of the framework of the Panama Green Label
