Background: A community-based, highly participatory micro-hydroelectric initiative in the Dominican Republic has now placed 13 village-scale systems in sustainable operation. Scaling up this “best practices” model effort to implement systems in many hundreds of appropriate sites available will require the development of a decentralized technical support network, and an appropriate national institutional center to provide coordination, training, and additional technical services. Through this grant, CAREL, a community-based NGO that has played a lead role in this initiative, will complete its first classroom and office building, organize a national technical support network based on the Dominican Network of Sustainable Development With Renewable Energy (REDSER) now in formation, train a minimum of two “community technicians” in each participating community through a series of workshops, and systematize the existing professional on-site extension services.
Objective: Provide technical assistance and capacity building to support and replicate a community-based highly participatory micro-hydroelectric initiative in the Dominican Republic.
Expected Results:
A specialized training center built by community members completed, equipped and in operation in El Limón, Dominican Republic.
A National Technical Support Network organized with at least 25 communities committed and 5 selected regional coordinators.
50 community technicians trained and certified in participating communities and 10 workshops held.
Technical extension services systematized and 3 technical extension experts selected and certified.
