The Department of Economic and Social Development supports member States on their multilateral efforts addressing the social development agenda and on the fulfillment of the mandates received by the relevant political forums, especially those refereeing to promoting and facilitating cooperation and exchanges in social protection.
Key areas of action:
Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development Space for dialogue and exchange with the aim of undertaking the actions needed to comply with the mandates of the Summits of the Americas and OAS General Assembly sessions with respect to social development, especially through the use of existing inter-American mechanisms to share experiences on social protection and efforts to combat poverty and inequality. The Inter-American Committee on Social Development's (CIDES) Strengthens and reinforce Inter-American dialogue in order to support the creation of policies and develop cooperation activities in the area of social development, especially focusing on the fight against poverty and discrimination in the hemisphere. Also, the CIDES provides follow-up to the mandates of the Summit of the Americas as well as those agreements reached in the framework of the Meetings of Ministers and High-level Authorities of Social Development. The Inter-American Social Protection Network (IASPN) is a cooperation mechanism for national social development ministries and agencies, in collaboration with international organizations, non-governmental organizations, private sector and academia, to promote the exchange and transfer of experiences and knowledge on social protection. The IASPN seeks to facilitate cooperation in social protection, provide institutional strengthening capacity to national social protection agencies, and offer a community of practice of policy-makers and practitioners through a knowledge and learning platform.
