VI Summit of the Americas: Poverty and Inequality

In a joint effort with the Summits of the Americas Secretariat, the department of Social Development and Employment launched a virtual survey with the objective of obtaining the perspective of social actors on how to address the high rates of poverty and large internal inequities observed within the different countries of the hemisphere in regards to distribution of income, access to basic social services, care of traditionally marginalized groups, and the advancement of the Millennium Development Goals.

The collected information was complemented with the virtual forum "Summit Talk" on poverty and inequities reduction. The results of this survey and the forum discussions is available to the interested parties and was used as inputs for the drafting of a document that will be presented to the OAS Member States in the context of the meetings of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG). The ultimate goal is to have the perspective of social actors during the Sixth Summit of the Americas, to be held in April 2012 in Cartagena, Colombia.

On November 3 and 4 in Washington, DC, a meeting with social actors was held within the framework of the preparatory activities for the Sixth Summit of the Americas, in order to finalize the recommendations that will be presented to the Member States representatives.

Social Determinants of Health

In the framework of the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in partnership with the Organization of American States organized a Regional Virtual Consultation with civil society organizations (CSOs). This consultation aimed to seek the views on various aspects regarding the determinants of health as a useful framework to address health inequities in the Region of the Americas and its link with the Millennium Development Goals.

Additionally, the Organization of American States (OAS) will take the opportunity to analyze the surveys from a rights-based perspective, in observance of the advancement by Member States to fulfill the Additional Protocol of the American Convention on Human Rights on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, “The Protocol of San Salvador.”
