A hemisphere united for Haiti

This past January 12, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, taking the lives of thousands of people and leaving over a million people homeless. In response to this tragedy the Organization of American States (OAS) reacted immediately by creating an Emergency Committee and working with other organizations of the inter-American system to coordinate efforts aimed at channeling direct help to the victims.

To the OAS, Haiti has for many years been one of its priorities. Since the opening of the OAS National Office in Haiti in 1956, the Organization has led a variety of long-term projects related to the promotion of democracy, sound governance and human rights. Today, Haiti needs more help than ever and the OAS is prepared to take all necessary measures in supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts in Haiti, mainly on all issues in which the Organization has accumulated experience and can offer added value.
