INTERVENTION BY THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC, GREECE THE MEETING FOR DIALOGUE BETWEEN HEADS OF DELEGATION OF MEMBER STATES AND DELEGATIONS OF PERMANENT OBSERVER COUNTRIES DURING THE XXXV REGULAR SESSION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
June 5, 2005 - FORT LAUDERDALE
It is with great pleasure that Greece is announcing a contribution of $ 30.000 to the OAS Lecture Series of the Americas.
This initiative is intended to further assisting OAS efforts to promote hemispheric cooperation and productive dialogue, with a view to addressing the economic, social and political challenges in the region and achieving the objectives of the Summit of the Americas. It is in line with our common tradition and our shared commitment to ideals relating to such important issues as democratic governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
Greece, which obtained its Permanent Observer status in 1979, both bilaterally and as a member of the European Union, with its historical and cultural ties to the countries of the Western Hemisphere, will continue to constructively contribute to the enhancement of dialogue between the European Union and the countries of the various regional schemes like the Rio Group, Mercosur and the Community of the Andean Nations.
In concluding, allow me to once again reiterate the great importance that Greece attaches to the effectiveness of the work carried out by the OAS and its continued determination to actively participate, through its national development policy, to the attainment of common fundamental goals such as the alleviation of poverty and the achievement of sustainable development.
