OAS Secretary General Congratulates New President of Guyana

  December 5, 2011

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today congratulated the new President of the Republic of Guyana, Donald Ramotar, who assumed office on Saturday after winning the general elections of November 28.

In a letter addressed to the recently elected leader of the Caribbean country, Secretary General Insulza extended his congratulations on a victory that “reflects your personal achievement after years of involvement in the country’s political development.” The head of the OAS recalled that the “free and calm atmosphere” that reigned during the voting after a “very competitive” electoral campaign represented “a tribute to the strongly held democratic traditions for which the CARICOM region as a whole is well known.”

The top representative of the hemispheric organization took the opportunity to express the support of the OAS to the new Government and assured the new President that “the Organization stands ready to work with you and the people of Guyana in advancing the country’s development.”
