OAS Receives 500,000 dollars from the United States for Demining in Ecuador

  October 11, 2011

The Government of the United States donated half a million dollars to the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Comprehensive Action against Antipersonnel Mines (AICMA) program being conducted in Ecuador for demining work in the surrounding areas of the Condor mountain range.

The donation was made by the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement of the Department of State and will be used to assist humanitarian demining units working in the Condor mountain range zone, near the border with Peru. The funds will be used to pay for new mine detectors, protection equipment, emergency medical equipment, and camping teams to assist experts working on mine removal in the Amazon jungle.

This is the second donation by the United States to the demining program in Ecuador in 2011. The first was of 480,000 dollars and was used to buy high-frequency radios.

Ecuador and Peru mobilized their troops during a brief period in 1995 because of a border dispute along their common land frontier, resulting in the mining of some nearby areas in both countries. This included the Ecuadorian provinces of El Oro, Loja, Zamora Chinchipe, and Morona Santiago.

The United States, in collaboration with the OAS, supports the demining work in the Loja province, with equipment especially adapted by the Department of Defense to clear mined fields located in the areas surrounding the city of Zapotillos. The United States is one of the guarantors of the peace between Ecuador and Peru, and provides assistance to both nations in their demining tasks with the objective of offering security to local populations and stimulating economic development.

The demining activities are conducted by special units of the Ecuadorean Army under the supervision of the Humanitarian Demining Center and with technical assistance from the OAS Comprehensive Action against Antipersonnel Mines.
