OAS Provides Technical Support to El Salvador for Inter-American Ministers of Labor Meeting
August 2, 2011
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, together with the Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the Organization, Ambassador Joaquin Maza, today signed an agreement for the hemispheric institution to provide technical support towards the XVII Regular Meeting of the Inter-American Ministers of Labor to take place October 31 to November 1st, 2011, in San Salvador.
The agreement establishes a regulatory framework for the execution of the activities involving the presentation of technical cooperation on behalf of the OAS regarding preparation and development of the meeting with the motto “Advancing in economic and social cooperation with sustainable development."
The Secretary General asserted that “we still have big challenges in our region on labor issues such as unemployment among the youth and gender inequality,” among other issues cited to be analyzed at the meeting in El Salvador.
The head of the OAS highlighted that “dialogue, collaboration, and solidarity among the Ministers of Labor in the region will get stronger because of El Salvador's commitment." He thanked and congratulated the Salvadorian government, their Foreign Ministry, and their Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare for hosting the meeting.
We still have big challenges in our region such as problems in lack of regulation, unemployment among the youth, gender inequality, lack of social protection and children labor. These topics will be analyzed at the meeting in El Salvador under the basic theme of the conference.
For his part, Ambassador Maza said the meeting, besides being a “hemispheric commitment,” demonstrates “another show of trust for El Salvador and our government from the Organization of American States."
Also present at the event, held in the office of the Secretary General in Washington DC, were the Chair of the Permanent Council and Representative of Guatemala, Ambassador Jorge Skinner-Klee; and the Representative of Canada, Ambassador Allan Culham, among others.
