OAS and the Documentation Sciences Foundation Launch Online Seminar on Open Parliament
December 9, 2014
The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Documentation Sciences Foundation launch today an online seminar named "Open Parliaments: Moving from Thought to Action," which aims to serve as a first effort in the creation of a repository of information and knowledge related to successful experiences of open, transparent and accessible parliaments.
This initiative is carried out by the Department of Sustainable Democracy and Special Missions of the Secretariat for Political Affairs Section of the OAS, through its Section in Support of Representative Institutions. The discussions, scheduled to take place until December 20, will focus on the exchange of experiences between legislators and legislative authorities from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, el Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the regional Spanish legislatures of the Basque Government, Andalusia and Extremadura, the legislature of the Mexican state of Puebla, the Andean Parliament and the following civil society organizations: Borde Politico, FUNDAR, Congreso Transparente, Asociación Civil Ágora, Semillas para la Democracia and SOCIALTIC.
The seminar will include one hundred participants, who together with the exhibitors will share proposals during the following two weeks, with a special emphasis on those already put into action by the different countries. The debate will seek to reinforce the capacities of participating legislative institutions; foster greater knowledge among participating legislators on transparency, integrity and accountability; improve overall legislative performance and increase access to information and citizen participation in legislative processes.
At the conclusion of the seminar, a knowledge database regarding good legislative practices on transparency, accountability and openness will be generated. This will allow for a future exchange of experiences, mechanisms of cooperation, and lines of action to strengthen efforts currently underway.
