The OAS Conducts First Accreditation Training Workshop on ISO Electoral Standard

  November 18, 2014

The Organization of American States (OAS), in its headquarters in Washington DC, today began the First Training Workshop on the ISO electoral standard (ISO/TS 17582:2014) for Lead Auditors and Certification Bodies. This event will explain the tools, expertise and knowledge required by the International Electoral Accreditation Body (IEAB) for certification bodies to be accredited to certify electoral bodies in the region.

The OAS led the effort to create the ISO electoral standard, which was published in February 2014, given the importance of developing effective tools to assist with electoral bodies that request assistance in improving their services. The standard allows electoral bodies to certify eight key processes: voter registration; registration of political organizations and candidates; electoral logistics; vote casting; vote counting and declaration of results; electoral education; oversight of campaign financing; and the resolution of electoral disputes.

In May 2014, the OAS created the IEAB to accredit certification bodies that will carry out certification audits based on the ISO electoral standard. The organizations represented in the workshop will have the opportunity to gain a provisional accreditation, allowing them to be among the first accredited to certify electoral bodies against the standard. Individuals who successfully complete the training will also be able to attain the provisional status of lead assessor.

This event, which will last until November 21, is organized by the OAS Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO) as part of its efforts to improve public management and promote more transparent and efficient electoral administration.
