OAS Secretary General Expresses Condolences on Passing of Former Minister of Agriculture of Guyana
October 30, 2014
The Secretary General of the Organization of Americas States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today sent a letter of condolence to the President of Guyana, Donald Ramotar, on the passing of the former Minister of Agriculture, Lands and Fisheries of Guyana, and former Presidential Advisor on Science, Technology, and the Environment, Navin Chandarpal.
“The late Dr. Chandarpal made a significant contribution to the public service in Guyana over the last 22 plus years and will be particularly remembered for his efforts in helping to steer the country on a path toward sustainable development and the adoption of sound environmental practices. He was an advocate for regional agricultural policies in the deliberations of our sister agency, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture,” wrote the Secretary General.
“We at the OAS recall Dr. Chandarpal´s support for and contributions to the work undertaken by the Organization in implementing such regional projects as Caribbean: Adaptation to Global Climate Change, which paved the way for the creation of the Caribbean Climate Center, now located in Belize. He was also instrumental in furthering Guyana´s gift to the international community for the study of climate change and the environment, the Iwokrama Rain Forest Project,” continued the letter.
In conclusion, the Secretary General asks President Ramotar to convey his condolences and that of the Organization to the family and friends of Dr. Chandarpal, as well as the people of Guyana “on the loss of this son of the soil.”
