New Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the OAS Presented Credentials
December 2, 2013
The new Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the Organization of American States (OAS), Elisa Ruiz Diaz, today presented to the Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, the credentials that accredit her to the hemispheric Organization.
Secretary General Insulza highlighted the experience and career of the diplomat designated by President Horacio Cartes. "Ambassador Ruiz Diaz knows the Organization well, which will be very important in the times ahead," he said, referring to the debate on the strategic vision of the OAS currently underway in the institution.
The head of the hemispheric Organization noted that the appointment of Ambassador Ruiz Diaz comes in the midst of "a new and important democratic period for the country, which we have followed with great interest. We know that when countries open themselves fully to democracy, as is happening in Paraguay, there is more discussion, more debate, more questioning and more public presence, and I'm sure, after several conversations with President Cartes, that there will be a political and social discussion of the kind that the countries of our region need."
For her part, Ambassador Ruiz Diaz expressed her intent to begin very soon work in the field of strengthening democratic institutions and governance, and highlighted the "important work and recognition" of the OAS in this area. The Paraguayan diplomat further emphasized the commitment of the government of her country to the ideals and principles of the multilateral institution, while mentioning her willingness to work to "move forward on the core issues of the Organization’s agenda."
During the ceremony, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, several Permanent Representatives of member countries were present.
