PERU AND OAS SIGN VENUE AGREEMENT FOR 40TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
December 16, 2009
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, and the Permanent Representative of Peru before the OAS, María Zavala Valladares, today signed the Venue Agreement for the 40th General Assembly of the Organization in the city of Lima, Peru, from June 6 to 8, 2010. The document was signed in a ceremony that took place in the office of the Secretary General at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The Secretary General thanked the Government of President Alan García for being host country and recalled that 2010 is known as the year of the Bicentennial of America’s Independence. “Peru, as the core of the Inca Empire, is the best place to celebrate this independence,” Secretary General Insulza said. The celebration of the 40th General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Lima, he added, “is a great occasion, a great deed and a great venue.”
The OAS and the Peruvian government also signed the agreement for the celebration of the 76th Period of Regular Sessions of the Inter-American Juridical Committee in the same city from March 14 to 24 of 2010. “We acknowledge the contribution that Peru has made to law in the Americas,” the Secretary General said, and recalled the role that the South American country played in the elaboration of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, “which is the main juridical instrument of our Organization.”
For her part, Ambassador Zavala Valladares said Peru “feels extremely honored to be the venue for such important events” and is committed “to carrying out her utmost efforts to achieve their success in benefit of the entire region and to meet the expectations of the Member States.”
The Peruvian representative emphasized that her country, as founding member of the OAS, “has supported since the beginning the process of integration and of hemispheric political dialogue to emphasize the promotion of peace and regional security.”
Also present at the ceremony were the Assistant Secretary General, Albert R. Ramdin, the President of the Permanent Council of the OAS and Representative of Colombia, Luis Alfonso Hoyos, the Secretary for Political Affairs of the Organization, Víctor Rico, and the OAS Secretary for Administration and Finance, Frank Almaguer.
