OAS Permanent Council Session on the Situation between Costa Rica and Nicaragua to Reopen Tomorrow

The Special Session of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) convened to consider the request of the Republic of Costa Rica on the situation involving the Republic of Nicaragua in the border zone of the San Juan River will reopen tomorrow at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT), an announcement made by the Chair of the Council and Permanent Representative of El Salvador, Joaquín Maza, after proposing the suspension of the meeting.

During today’s meeting, the Minister of Foreign Relations and Religion of Costa Rica, René Castro, presented information to detail his perspective on the events that took place in the border zone with Nicaragua. For his part, the Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the OAS, Denis Moncada, defended the position of his government and gave background information to support it. Around 13:30 EDT (17:30 GMT), the session was suspended following the interventions of the Permanent Representatives of the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Venezuela and the United States, with the announcement that it would reopen at 15:00 EDT (19:00 GMT).

Afterwards, a private meeting was held between the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza; Foreign Minister Castro and his Permanent Representative to the OAS, Enrique Castillo; Ambassador Moncada; the Chair of the Council, Ambassador Maza; and the Permanent Representatives of Guatemala, Jorge Skinner-Klee, and the Dominican Republic, Virgilio Alcántara.

At 17:00 EDT (21:00 GMT), and at the suggestion of the Chair of the Council, Ambassador Maza, the decision was taken to continue the session tomorrow at 10:00 EDT (14:00 GMT). The remainder of the meeting will be broadcast live on the OAS Website.
