OAS, INE of Mexico and International IDEA Hold Seminar on Accessibility and Electoral Participation

The Organization of American States (OAS), the National Electoral Institute of Mexico (INE for its initials in Spanish), and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) inaugurated today the Seventh Inter-American Electoral Seminar at INE headquarters in Mexico City. This edition of the event is supported by two institutions with broad experience in the field, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and The Trust for the Americas.
During the week, 28 members of the electoral management bodies of the Americas and the Caribbean, together with a group of 10 panelists, will exchange experiences and look for common solutions to the challenges posed by the need to guarantee accessibility and electoral participation in the region.
During the opening ceremony, the Director of the Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation (DECO), Gerardo de Icaza, highlighted the importance of reaching a multi-sectorial commitment to work towards more inclusive elections and said that ¨this seminar starts with a paradigm change in the concept of disability, recognizing that the barriers that could exist and society’s prejudice constitute by themselves a disability.¨
The National Electoral Institute of Mexico´s Advisor, Lorenzo Córdova, said that without inclusion there is no democracy and added that ¨equality before institutions and between people for their participation in politics are key principles we must apply in institutional decisions and legislative processes for the strengthening of democratic systems.¨
With this training session, the OAS aims to maintain a space for a high-level technical debate on the role of electoral authorities in the promotion of accessibility and electoral participation. The Seminar is part of a commitment on behalf of the OAS to the consolidation of electoral and democratic institutions across the Americas.
