OAS Hosts Civil Registration Workshop in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

  October 10, 2013

The Organization of American States (OAS), through its Universal Civil Identity Program in the Americas (PUICA), today launched a workshop in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for Eastern Caribbean States that brings together civil registry officials from the region to deepen work toward the Program’s goal of universal civil registration.

The Regional Workshop of the Eastern Caribbean States on Civil Registry Databases and Interoperability is taking place October 10 and 11 in Kingstown, and brings together civil registry authorities from Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to plan for next steps to connect the databases with passport offices and other State entities and to recognize the completion of the Eastern Caribbean Modernization Project.

PUICA began the Project three years ago to scan vital statistic certificates and input this information on searchable databases. Through voluntary contributions from the Governments of Canada, Luxembourg and South Korea, PUICA purchased equipment, developed software and trained data entry clerks to scan and input information from books containing birth, death, marriage, adoption and legitimization certificates.
