Message from the OAS Secretary General on the International Day of Democracy

  September 15, 2014

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, celebrated today the International Day of Democracy saying it is the only system that fully recognizes people´s freedom and makes possible its exercise with respect for the rights of all, and added that respecting, caring for, and strengthening it leads to the improvement of societies.

In commemorating this date, Secretary General Insulza reiterated that the Americas, as a region, is experiencing one of the greatest democratic moments of its recent history, but warned that “its health is not the same everywhere, and therefore we urge people to work every day to respect democracy and ensure that it is respected, with dialogue as the great and unique instrument.”

The OAS Secretary General lamented that currently there are some countries in the world experiencing the absence or decline of democratic values and reiterated his conviction that the peaceful struggle for freedom must be the guiding light for those who believe in democracy. “To strengthen democracy is a never-ending task and to continue with it is the responsibility of peoples and governments, which can and must carry it out in peace and with full tolerance for opposing views,” he said.
