Message from the Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, on Human Rights Day

  December 10, 2015

Today we celebrate Human Rights Day.

We do so in a region that still suffers great inequalities in terms of guarantees of human rights in their holistic conception of civil, political, cultural, economic, and social rights.

That is why today I call on our governments, our civil society organizations, the private sector and in general on the citizens of the Americas to fight every day so that our neighbors, our co-workers, our fellow citizens, and everyone with whom we share this hemisphere have the same access to the same opportunities that we have.

This is a special day for us at the OAS, with our guiding principle of “More rights for more people.”

The future of our children cannot be subject to the place where they were born, their social standing, the color of their skin, their gender or sexual orientation.

We have an obligation to level the playing field. At the OAS we are working and we will continue to work toward that goal. For us, the people always come first.

On this December 10, MORE rights for more people.
