Message from the OAS Secretary General on the Elections in Venezuela

  December 7, 2015

I would like to congratulate the Venezuelan people for the high turnout in yesterday´s election – more than 74 percent participation – and for the general atmosphere of calm and peace during the election, in which the citizenry was able to exercise its right to vote.

While the final count is not yet known, it is auspicious that both sides have accepted the results calmly and with a democratic spirit. The political parties and leaders showed in their majority a maturity that will be very necessary in the coming months to move toward a future based on the Constitution and respect for institutions.

We are satisfied with the work that has been done by the OAS. The results – who won, who lost – are part of the circumstances of the country. For us, the most important thing has always been that on December 6 there was calm and renewed guarantees regarding the vote count, and that the day after the election was calm.

In the weeks before the election, we contributed with our grain of sand to generating an ethical framework for the electoral process and, as we always do, we reiterate today that we are willing to work together with Venezuela.
