OAS Supports Initiative for National Dialogue in El Salvador

  August 27, 2014

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, has welcomed the initiative of the government of President Salvador Sánchez Cerén to promote an inclusive and genuine dialogue with all of the political forces of El Salvador, saying “only a respectful and inclusive dialogue can bring the sides together and lead to broad agreements that translate into public policies that benefit Salvadoran society.”

The OAS leader highlighted that “the willingness of the political and social forces of El Salvador to engage in dialogue is a demonstration of the democratic maturity and responsibility of the Salvadoran people,” and in line with this practice, reiterated the readiness of the General Secretariat of the Organization to continue its support, by way of good offices and political intermediation, for the efforts by the government of President Sánchez Cerén already underway.

Insulza said “the OAS is the regional political body par excellence to support the processes of democratic construction in the countries of the region.” Along similar lines, he thanked the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for its willingness to work together in support of the process of dialogue in El Salvador.

Yesterday, during the presentation of the Human Development Report of the UNDP for Latin America, which took place in the Salvadoran capital, President Sánchez Cerén thanked the OAS for its constant support for the strengthening of democratic institutions in the Central American country.
