The OAS and Spain to Cooperate on Cyber Security and Combating Terrorism

  November 16, 2015

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Spain today signed in Washington, DC an agreement for cooperation on cyber security and the fight against terrorism.

The Memorandum of Understanding establishes the basis for cooperation, mainly in areas of cybersecurity, travel document security and fraud prevention, as well as efforts to prevent and combat terrorism and assist its victims, among other issues. The OAS and Spain will exchange information, develop initiatives of mutual interest, and carry out joint activities of legislative assistance for member states, training, workshops, conferences, seminars and meetings.

After signing the document, the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, said that the Organization "hopes to contribute, through the promotion of police cooperation in the fight against cyber crime and cyber terrorism, to strengthening cooperation on cyber security and develop a coordinated approach to combat cyber threats. "

For his part, the Permanent Observer of Spain to the OAS, Jorge Hevia, recalled that the government of his country has "cooperated very closely with the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE), the entity responsible for the area within the OAS," and highlighted that "Spain plays a special role on this issue", a country that has a National Cyber Security Strategy and a National Cyber Security Council. "This is a way to reiterate Spain's commitment to the values and work of the Organization," he said.

The OAS and Spain have collaborated on cyber security issues since 2007.
