OAS and EU Officials Discuss Cooperation in Washington

  September 27, 2012

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin met this week in Washington, DC with the European Union’s Managing Director for the Americas Christian Leffler.

The meeting focused on areas of cooperation between the two organizations, including the contribution by the European Union (EU) of one million euros to the Inter American Human Rights System.

The EU and the OAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2009, providing a framework for inter institutional dialogue. In addition to its financial contribution to the Inter American Human Rights System, the EU has committed 2 million euros to the Belize Guatemala Adjacency Zone project.

According to Assistant Secretary General Ramdin, “The European Union has demonstrated its commitment to meaningful initiatives in the Americas and they also have provided the forum for the OAS to engage with our partners in Europe. It is a solid, fruitful partnership, and we hope to strengthen this relationship in a way that benefits both organizations.”

Earlier this year EU and OAS officials met in Brussels to develop concrete initiatives for cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean. A second meeting, to discuss development and security issues is scheduled to take place early next year in Washington, DC.
