OAS Secretary General Condemns Murder of Human Rights Lawyers in Honduras

  September 27, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, strongly condemned the murder of two Honduran human rights lawyers, and called on the government of Honduras to exercise all of its authority in order to clarify both crimes and the punishment of their perpetrators.

Insulza said the tragic death of Antonio Trejo Cabrera and Manuel Eduardo Diaz Masariegos “is a warning to us about the severity of the levels of violence in some Central American countries, and obliges the international community to redouble its efforts to support the government of President Lobo in its struggle for human rights and against organized crime.”

“Crime and impunity are persistent challenges in the Central American nation,” said the chief representative of the OAS, “and we cannot ignore the call from Honduran society to fight not only against insecurity, but also against its deeper causes.”
