OAS Secretary General Welcomes Peace Efforts in Colombia

  August 28, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, welcomed the “exploratory talks” with the FARC announced by the President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, to make way for a dialogue with the armed groups in his country, with a view to ending the conflict that has marked Colombian life for the last five decades.

Insulza praised the progress represented by this approach, and highlighted the prudence shown by the Colombian President, who yesterday explained the steps that have been taken in his strategy of dialogue with the guerrillas with an end to the conflict as the ultimate goal.

On this point, Secretary General Insulza expressed hope for the success of this effort and offered the Colombian government the collaboration of the OAS, “and my own, in any case in which it means advancing toward the peace that Colombian society and all the countries of the region desire.”
