OAS Co-organizes International Seminar on Political Reforms in Buenos Aires

  July 3, 2014

The Organization of American States (OAS) inaugurated yesterday at the Legislature of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires the International Seminar “Political Reforms in Party Organizations,” which seeks to contribute to the discussion of best practices in political party reforms, as well as the processes of political negotiation that lead to them.

The inauguration featured the presence of Matias Rancini, Deputy Administrative Secretary of the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires, who welcomed the speakers and participants, inviting them to take full advantage of the event to exchange experiences. For his part, Miguel De Luca, President of the Argentine Association of Political Analysis, co-sponsor of the event, highlighted that “historically, political parties mobilized the citizenry to demand their rights, created the role of the professional politician, and forged the democracy we know today, and therefore to debate and reflect upon reforms to political parties is, without a doubt, to debate and think on the improvement of democracy.”

During the meeting, Betilde Muñoz-Pogossian, Senior Policy Official in the Secretariat for Political Affairs of the OAS said “political reforms are part of the process of democratic construction of the countries of the region.” She added that “the OAS is a privileged forum for promoting the exchange of experiences and lessons learned, but also for providing technical and political cooperation with the countries involved.” The seminar is one of the activities that form part of a great effort by the OAS to support countries considering political reforms.

For her part, Flavia Freidenberg, Director of the Ibero-American Institute of the University of Salamanca in Spain, said “the importance of this forum as a key stage to generate a bridge between academics, political practice and international organizations, concerned by the constant criticisms of the way parties work and over the strengthening of democracy in the region.”

During the two days of the event, the International Seminar will feature prominent figures from the region in the area of political reform, and will cover a range of issues related to the functioning and strengthening of political parties, among others, internal democracy initiatives, party financing, positive methods of differentiation, party jumping (transfuguismo in Spanish), and independent candidacies.
