STATEMENT OF THE OAS SECRETARY GENERAL AFTER MEETING WITH THE PERMANENT COUNCIL AND PRESIDENT ZELAYA

  September 1, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, on Tuesday met with the President of Honduras, José Manuel Zelaya, and took part in the private meeting of the OAS Permanent Council with the Honduran leader. After both meetings, Secretary General Insulza said:

“All members of the Council, either with their own voice or through the coordinators of the regional groups showed their continuous and full support to President Zelaya as the President of Honduras. At the same time, they fully ratified all resolutions adopted so far by the General Assembly and the Council itself.

I would like to highlight that, after two months, the fact that both the OAS Permanent Council and the international community have kept a unanimous position is an important achievement. Hopefully we will obtain better results in the coming months”.
