OAS and Mexican State of Quintana Roo Organize Tourism Security Course

  July 31, 2012

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the government of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo are conducting, until Thursday August 2, a class titled "Training Course in Tourism Security" in Playa del Carmen, with the aim of improving and strengthening the safety standards in the tourism industry.

"Our state captures 40 percent of foreign tourism earnings in Mexico, we are the leaders of tourism in Latin America and this compels us to professionalize our approach to security," said Roberto Borge, Governor of Quintana Roo, where the Riviera Maya is located.

Governor Borge stressed that during the course, "we are not just talking about security in terms of policing or prevention;" rather, "we are talking about civil protection and service culture," as well as "everything that provides protection to tourism.”

For his part, Executive Secretary for Integral Development of the OAS, Jorge Saggiante, said that one of the priorities of the course is to reach agreements to make progress on security in one of the main tourist centers of the western hemisphere.

The course, designed by the OAS and funded by the government of Canada, began on July 30 and concludes on Thursday, August 2. Among the attendees are representatives of law enforcement, private security guards, businessmen, and public officials.
