OAS Secretary General Welcomes Signing of Agreement on Democratic Governability between Main Political Parties in Paraguay
June 30, 2013
The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today welcomed the signing of an agreement on democratic governability between the main political parties in Paraguay. The Asociación Nacional Republicana, the Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico, the Unión Nacional de Ciudadanos Éticos, the leftist alliance Avanza País and the Partido Encuentro Nacional signed the agreement, which was promoted by the President-elect, Horacio Cartes.
Insulza said “Paraguay is providing an example to the world of how a nation which recently suffered a severe political crisis can use political dialogue as a way to strengthen its political system and find consensual solutions to fundamental problems like poverty, insecurity, and corruption.” Secretary General Insulza expressed his hope that all the country’s political forces join the agreement.
The OAS has deployed an important diplomatic mission in Paraguay since the crisis that culminated with the impeachment of President Fernando Lugo, and observed the general elections in the country on April 21, which took place in conditions of normality.
Secretary General Insulza reiterated that the OAS is ready to offer its support to Paraguay to deepen this process of dialogue and translate it into concrete decisions on public policy that benefit the Paraguayan people.
