UNITED STATES CONTRIBUTES TO OAS CONFLICT RESOLUTION EFFORTS
December 21, 2004
The United States has contributed $389,746 to the Organization of American States (OAS) to advance its work in peaceful resolution of conflicts throughout the hemisphere.
The contribution to the OAS Special Area for the Promotion of Dialogue and Conflict Resolution brings the total amount given to this project by the United States in the last two years to over $800,000. This year the United States contributed a total of $2.9 million to the OAS Fund for Strengthening Democracy to support programs that strengthen democracy and protect human rights in the Americas.
The Special Area for the Promotion of Dialogue and Conflict Resolution was established to enhance the ability of the OAS to respond to requests from member states for assistance in strengthening their capacity in conflict resolution. The program is designed to provide member states the tools to achieve peaceful settlement of disputes, both within and beyond their borders.
The Special Area, part of the Department of Democratic and Political Affairs, assists the OAS General Secretariat, governments and civil societies of its member states in the design and implementation of dialogue and consensus building processes, conflict prevention and resolution systems.
