OAS Presents Recommendations Following Local Elections in Bolivia

The former President of Guatemala Álvaro Colom today presented the report of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) that he led to the municipal elections held on March 29 in Bolivia.

The Chief of Mission highlighted to the Permanent Council of the OAS "the maturity of the Bolivian people who turned out in great numbers on Election Day" and expressed his "satisfaction with the process." In particular, the verbal report of the Mission ) highlighted "the participation of foreign citizens residing in the country, who were able to vote at the municipal level after fulfilling the requirements of the law as a provision of political inclusion. The plurality expressed at the polls is yet another show of the consolidation of democracy in the country."

The Permanent Representative of Bolivia to the OAS, Diego Pary, said elections in his country "are true celebrations of democracy" and thanked to the OAS for responding quickly to the request by the Electoral Board for the deployment of an observation mission. "We welcome the recommendations presented in the verbal report today, and they will be put to the consideration of our electoral authorities, so that they contribute to the strengthening of the institutional framework of the electoral body," said the Bolivian diplomat.
