Secretary General Welcomes and Expresses Gratitude for Contributions of Canada to OAS Programs

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today highlighted the importance of a series of new contributions by the Government of Canada to initiatives and programs of the OAS and the Inter-American system.

The contributions, announced by the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, of approximately 15 million Canadian dollars ($12 mn USD), in the framework of the Seventh Summit of the Americas, held on April 10 and 11 in Panama City, Panama, aim to strengthen health, security and democratic governance, and border management in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Secretary General Insulza thanked Canada for the contributions, calling them “yet another demonstration of the firm commitment of Canada to addressing the most important challenges in the Americas, through the projects carried out by this Organization.” The leader of the hemispheric institution recalled that Canada celebrated this year its 25th anniversary as a member state of the Organization, and highlighted “its constant support for the strengthening of democracy, the protection of human rights, and improving citizen security.”

Specifically, the new contributions announced by the Canadian Prime Minister during the Summit include contributions aimed at supporting: Electoral Observation Missions (EOMs) in Guyana, Suriname, and Guatemala; initiatives of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the OAS to fight money laundering; initiatives of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE) of the OAS to provide training in maritime and port security, crisis management and prevention of terrorist activities; the efforts of the Mission to Support the Peace Process in Colombia (MAPP/OAS); the projects of the Justice Center of the Americas (CEJA) to facilitate greater access to justice and more transparent legal frameworks in the region; and efforts in border management and crime prevention, in support of maritime and port security, as well as the tourism industry in the region, among others.
