OAS Accompanies the Conclusion of the Electoral Process in Costa Rica

  April 4, 2014

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS), led by former Mexican presidential candidate Josefina Vázquez Mota, arrived in San José, Costa Rica this week to accompany the second round of the presidential elections that will be held on Sunday and which will conclude the electoral process.

The delegation will meet with electoral and government authorities, political leaders, media, civil society representatives, academic institutions and other actors of the electoral process.

The EOM/OAS thus resumes the task it has carried out in Costa Rica since December, when it visited the country to prepare the Mission that was deployed to observe the first round of the presidential and parliamentary elections held on February 2. On that occasion, in addition to observing the electoral process on voting day, the Mission focused on implementing three methodologies that allowed for monitoring of conditions of equity in media coverage of the electoral campaigns, access to political and electoral funding, and in participation by men and women throughout the electoral process.

Following the elections, the EOM/OAS published a preliminary report with recommendations aimed at strengthening the Costa Rican electoral system. The mission is pleased to note that some of these recommendations have already been implemented.

The EOM/OAS calls on all Costa Ricans to go to the polls on Sunday to elect the next President of the country and is confident that the electoral authorities, political parties, and candidates will once again confirm their democratic spirit.

This is the eleventh election the OAS has observed in the country since Costa Rica became in 1962 the first country where the Organization deployed delegates to observe the electoral process. Since then, the OAS has observed presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections, as well as referendums in the country. During all this time, the OAS has witnessed the commitment of the Costa Rican people to democracy, their openness to international monitoring and their willingness to improve their electoral processes.
