OAS Secretary General Sends His Condolences to Chile for Earthquake Victims

  April 3, 2014

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, sent his personal condolences and those of the institution he leads to the people and government of Chile for the victims of the successive and violent earthquakes that shook the South American country in the last days.

"My thoughts are with my fellow Chileans and, in particular, with the victims and families of those killed in this disaster," said the Secretary General. "Although Chileans are sadly familiar with these phenomena, we never get used to the consequences of death and destruction that we suffer every time the earth shakes," Insulza said. "That is why I’m sending everyone a fraternal embrace," added the OAS Secretary General from Panama, where he arrived from Chile to participate in an international meeting.

In addition, the OAS leader praised the Chilean people's reaction to the disaster and commended the government of President Michelle Bachelet for its prompt and effective response to prevent further casualties and damage and to provide care for the victims. "I am proud of the seriousness and efficiency with which the national and regional authorities acted, the professionalism and speed demonstrated by our emergency services, and overall the extraordinary calm, orderliness and solidarity of all citizens in times when panic would be the normal reaction." This, Insulza said, "reinforces my conviction that Chile will again recover promptly and overcome the aftermath of the violence of natural disasters, which, unfortunately, we experience constantly in our country."
