OAS and CARICOM Discuss Closer Collaboration on Youth

  March 30, 2010

Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin met today with CARICOM Assistant Secretary General Edwin Greene to discuss how their respective institutions can work together to strengthen their collaboration and partnership in advancing the agenda on youth in the Americas. The two senior officials agreed to develop a mechanism for greater information exchange and an institutional strategy for both technical and political cooperation on this important issue.

In stressing “the need for both organizations to raise the level of political awareness and to focus greater attention on the issue of youth in the region;” Assistant Secretary General Ramdin recognized and expressed appreciation to the CARICOM Secretariat for its continued efforts to deepen the involvement of youth in national and regional development process.

“I know that youth mainstreaming is as important for the CARICOM Community as it is for the OAS.” In this regard, Ambassador Ramdin shared with his counterpart that the OAS had recently established an interdepartmental unit on youth as a way to mainstream the topic in all of the activities of the OAS. “I therefore look forward to sharing best practices, instituting mechanisms for future interaction and devising ways to ensure that our organizations give the issue of youth involvement the important political space necessary;” Ambassador Ramdin concluded.
