OAS ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL URGES CONTINUOUS COOPERATION BETWEEN OAS AND EU
March 25, 2009
Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Ramdin highlighted the significant achievements in democracy-building over the last 25 years but cautioned that more work needed to be done in terms of quality of governance. He called for closer collaboration between the OAS and the European Union on shared projects and programs, including the creation of partnerships with member states and between institutions. The ASG made these remarks while closing a day and half session on “The Role of the EU in democracy building in Latin America and the Caribbean”, at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C.
“Governments alone cannot create stability, prosperity and security; it is a responsibility for all in society,” stated Ramdin. “Democracy-building is a continuous and evolving process, one which requires the establishment of a structured, regular and institutionalized dialogue framework between all civic and governmental actors. Assistant Secretary General Ramdin challenged participants to begin thinking about the efforts of future generations in ensuring democratic governability, transparency, and accountability in the delivery of social and economic goods.
As part of the recommendations, and summarizing the conclusions of the forum, the Assistant Secretary General noted that gaps remain in sustaining good governance, peaceful relations, and renewed political leadership. He urged policy makers to prioritize educating for responsible citizenship, empowering youth and women in the political process and fostering more confidence in democracy.
The event, organized by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), intended to gather recommendations on the issue of democracy building to be further presented to the Swedish Government, in preparation for the Presidency of the European Union (EU) that this country will assume in July 2009.
