TURKEY CONTRIBUTES FUNDS FOR OAS STUDY ON PUBLIC SECURITY IN THE AMERICAS
March 27, 2007
The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert R. Ramdin, today welcomed a high-level diplomatic delegation from Turkey headed by the Director General for the Americas of that country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Vefahan Ocak.
During a meeting at OAS headquarters in Washington, Ramdin underscored the importance of strengthening relations with countries from other regions of the world and thanked the Turkish official for a $15,000 donation made by his government to the General Secretariat, to help fund a comprehensive study on Public Security in the Americas.
“Public security is becoming one of the focus areas in terms of looking at creating peace in society and mitigating conflict,” explained the Assistant Secretary General. He added that the well-being of citizens is critically important in order to foster social and economic development, “because without taking care of public security and safety in the streets, you cannot provide an environment for development.”
By addressing the issue of security, Ramdin said, governments will help create the conditions needed for progress and also reduce the problems of poverty, social exclusion and discrimination.
For his part, Ambassador Ocak praised the OAS for its work in the hemisphere and assured the Assistant Secretary General that Turkey will continue to support cooperation projects that benefit the Americas. “It is a small world, and the issue of public security is of immense importance for all regions,” he added.
During the brief ceremony, the Turkish diplomat also highlighted the “utmost importance” of the theme of the next OAS General Assembly, “Energy for Development.” Ocak said that his country, which became a permanent observer to the OAS in 1998, looks forward to participating in the June meeting, noting that “Turkey is a country on the rise on energy issues.”
Also attending today’s meeting were Turkey’s Alternate Observer to the OAS, Murat Karagöz; the Director of the OAS Department of Public Security, Christopher Hernandez Roy; and the Director of External Relations, Irene Klinger.
