The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, today noted “the seriousness of the situation involving Colombia and Ecuador” and stated that “it should be resolved within a framework of the respect of the principles that govern coexistence among American nations.” He reported that during the weekend and the last few hours he has been consulting with heads of State and foreign ministers of the region, “in the quest for a common position, prioritized on dialogue as the sole mechanism of negotiation.”

Insulza expressed hope that the Permanent Council, which has been convoked for tomorrow, Tuesday, at 3:00 p.m., “will provide guidance permitting to reach a peaceful solution to this crisis, and thus approach the problems at the root of its cause.” Therefore, the Secretary General will refrain from making further statements, as he awaits a decision by the Council.

However, Insulza deemed it necessary to recall that there remains a humanitarian crisis created by the prolonged hostage situation of a group of people held by Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC), and steps must be taken soon to work on their release.
