OAS Secretary General Meets with Panama’s Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, met today with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama, Francisco Alvarez de Soto, with whom he spoke about the support that the hemispheric institution has provided to the country on issues such as human rights and development, among others.

At the meeting, held at the organization’s headquarters in Washington DC, Vice Minister Alvarez de Soto, said that the OAS is a priority in his country’s foreign policy and said that "the organization is has probed and showed to be the hemispheric political forum for excellence that still remains valid and effective."

The Vice Minister also thanked the call made for “"a respectful dialogue to achieve reconciliation and peace" in resolving the situation with the indigenous groups in Panama issued by the Secretary General.

The Secretary General Insulza, meanwhile, welcomed the offer expressed by the Government of Panama to host the Seventh Summit of the Americas in 2015, an issue to be ratified by the Heads of State and Government at the next VI Summit to be held in Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) in April.

Other topics discussed at the meeting included the development and growth projects of the Panamanian government, the importance of establishing mechanisms to protect human rights, the country's energy future and the possible collaboration of the OAS in the distribution of land titles. The Permanent Representative of Panama to the OAS, Guillermo Cochez was also present at the meeting.
