OAS Secretary General Offers Collaboration to Honduras on Prison Issues

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, offered today concrete support from the Organization to the government of Honduras to collaborate towards solving the prison problems in that country.
Following the dramatic events of the fire in the Comayagua prison that caused the deaths of more than 300 people, Insulza indicated that the hemispheric organization is in a position to provide immediate help on matters of prison management and the social rehabilitation of prisoners.
Said cooperation will be offered in the framework of the broader initiative that the OAS offers Central American governments in support of their fight against crime, and that is directed to Central America as a whole. This plan, coordinated by the OAS, is called MAS Centroamérica.
Secretary General Insulza, who made the offer before the representative of Honduras to the OAS, Ambassador Leonidas Rosa Bautista, said the details of the program will be revealed in the near future, and that today the Organization’s Secretary for Multidimensional Security, Ambassador Adam Blackwell, would travel to the region to hold conversations on the matter with the country’s Minister of Security, Pompeyo Bonilla.
