With contributions totaling $70,000, the government of Korea today provided an important boost to two Organization of American States initiatives to help promote democracy in the Americas—a forum of political parties and an (OAS) team to monitor upcoming elections in Peru. Korea also pledged to donate equipment worth $100,000 for schools in Panama and Nicaragua, through the Inter-American Children’s Institute.
“Korea greatly appreciates the leading role the OAS has played in promoting peace, democracy and human rights in the Western Hemisphere,” said Mr. Byoung-Lip Cho, Alternate Observer of Korea to the OAS, as he made the presentation to Director of the OAS Department of External Relations Irene Klinger, who represented the Secretary General, during a brief ceremony at OAS headquarters. “Korea wholeheartedly shares the values the OAS has been promoting,” Mr. Cho said, adding that his country believes the success of OAS activities “is beneficial not only to OAS member countries , but also to the world as a whole, in terms of promoting peace and universal values.”
On behalf of his government, the Korean diplomat presented checks for financial support for the Central American Meeting of the Inter-American Forum on Political Parties, slated for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on April 9. Another amount was contributed towards the OAS Electoral Observation Mission that will monitor Peru’s general elections next April.
In thanking Korea for its donations, Klinger described the occasion as a celebration of Korea’s commitment to the OAS. She recalled the OAS’ emphasis on strengthening of democracy, and on promoting the holding of free and fair elections and good governance. “For us the contribution of the Korean government is very important to implement the mandates that we get from the member countries.”
Those on hand for the presentation included Ambassador of the Dominican Republic Roberto Alvarez and Alternate Representative of Peru to the OAS Ricardo Silva-Santisteban, who both expressed great appreciation for the Korean assistance. Elizabeth Spehar of the OAS Department for the Promotion of Democracy referred to activities that will be carried out by her department with the assistance provided by Korea.
A Permanent Observer since 1981, Korea has over the years contributed to a number of OAS program areas, including the Fund for Peace. The government has donated equipment and materials and has provided training for OAS member state officials, in addition to its participation in OAS electoral observation missions.
