EOM/OAS Expresses Concern over Timeframe for Disqualification of Candidates in Peru

  March 9, 2016

The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS) in Peru, headed by the former Uruguayan Foreign Minister Sergio Abreu, today expressed its concern over the timeframe established by law for the disqualification of candidacies for the general elections to be held on April 10 in Peru.

As was highlighted in its report on the regional and municipal elections of 2014, the EOM/OAS emphasizes that, while the system of challenges laid out in electoral legislation upholds the right to a hearing and judicial appeal, the timeframe set for the presentation of motions to disqualify candidates lead to uncertainty in both the electorate and the candidates themselves.

In response to the invitation of the Government of Peru to deploy an Electoral Observation Mission, the Chief of Mission will travel next Monday to Lima to follow-up on the preparations for the vote. During his stay in the country, he will meet with electoral authorities, members of political organizations and civil society representatives.

The Electoral Observation Mission of the OAS to be deployed to the April 10 elections will be the 17th sent by the Organization to Peru.
