OAS Co-Organizes First Special Conference of States Parties to the Convention of Belem do Pará in Mexico

The Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) will co-organize, on October 23 and 24, the First Special Conference of States Parties to the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women, in Mexico City.

The event, organized together with the National Women’s Institute of Mexico, brings together the competent national authorities of the that have ratified the Convention to analyze and debate the progress made and challenges on the issue of gender violence and implementation of the Convention, and to examine and strengthen the work of its Mechanism for Follow-up (MESECVI).

The opening act will feature the participation of Alejandra Mora Mora, Chair of the Conference of States Party, Chair and Titular Delegate to the CIM and Minister for the Status of Women; Lorena Cruz Sánchez, Titular Delegate to the CIM and Chair of the National Institute of Women of Mexico; and Juan Manuel Gómez Robledo, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Secretariat for External Relations of Mexico.

Linda Poole, Executive Secretary of the CIM from 1986 to 1996, a period in which the Convention was developed and adopted, will speak about the processes that led to the first regional instrument to specifically address violence against women.

The event will also include a panel on the impact of the Convention and best practices in its implementation, led by Elizabeth Odio Benito, Judge of the International Penal Court, Virginia Meneces Mendoza, National Coordinator of Nicaragua of the Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean for the Defense of Women’s Rights (CLADEM) and Juliana Bravo of the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL).

The first session of the meeting, Thursday the 22nd from 9:00 to 13:00 local time (14:00 TO 18:00 GMT) will be broadcast live on the OAS website. The agenda of the event is available here.
