OAS Hosts Meeting of Electoral Observation Organizations

The Organization of American States (OAS) will host representatives of 20 international electoral observation organizations between TOMORROW, December 13, and Friday, December 15, at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC, in the 12th Implementation Meeting of the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation.

During the opening tomorrow at 16:00 EST (21:00 GMT), heads of Electoral Observation Missions will discuss the topic “From the Democratic Charter to the Ballot Box – Experiences in Promoting Democracy.”

The meeting will be opened by the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council and Ambassador of Canada to the OAS, Jennifer May Loten, and will feature a panel including former President of Bolivia Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga; former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Jan Petersen; member of the European Parliament, Greens/Hungary, Tamás Meszerics; and OAS Ombudsman Sherry Tross.

The three day meeting will focus on issues including tools to observe direct democracy processes, the role of the internet in electoral campaigns, observing electoral justice, and the future of electoral observation. Agenda available here.
