Integrating Education with the Labor Market, Gender Equality and the 2030 Agenda, Issues of the Labor Ministerial in Barbados

Authorities in charge of the region's labor portfolio will meet on December 7 - 8 in Bridgetown, Barbados, at the XX Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (IACML) of the Organization of American States (OAS).

The central theme of the event will be " “Building on our Achievements and Advancing Toward Social Justice, Decent Work and Sustainable Development in the Americas.” The labor authorities of the Americas will collectively reflect and seek to build consensus on three issues:

  • Achieving better coordination between education, training and labor, as an essential element to unleash youth potential and address the future of work,
  • Implementation of Goal 8 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  • Gender equality and ensuring labor rights and opportunities for vulnerable populations.

The inauguration of the Conference will take place on December 7, and will include the participation of:

  • The OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro;
  • The Minister of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development of Barbados, Esther Byer Suckoo;
  • The Minister of Labor and Social Welfare of Mexico and Chair of XIX IACML, Alfonso Navarrete Prida; and
  • The ILO Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs,

The ministerial meeting will also include the participation of the main workers’ and employers’ organizations under the advisory bodies, COSATE and CEATAL, as well as other international organizations.
