OAS and OECD to Present Third Report on International Migration in the Americas

  August 26, 2015

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) will present the Third Report of the Continuous Reporting System on International Migration in the Americas (SICREMI 2015) on Friday, August 28 at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, and the Head of the Division of International Migration of the OECD, Jean-Christophe Dumont, will deliver the opening remarks of the event, ), while the former Principal Administrator of the Division of International Migration of the OCDE, Georges Lemaître will present the report.

The report indicates that while the United States and Canada remain the main focus of attraction for immigrants, there was an increase in intra-regional migration between the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly between neighboring countries. During the period 2010-2013, international migration to all countries in the Americas increased by five percent, and in the case of Latin American and Caribbean migration, grew 17 percent per year.

The report also reveals that only 30 percent of Latin American and Caribbean migrants left Spain after the economic crisis of 2008, when unemployment rose. Spain was a key destination of migrants from the region before the crisis.

The event will be broadcast live on the OAS Website.
