DC YOUTH ORCHESTRA PERFORMS IN BENEFIT CONCERT AT OAS SATURDAY
December 2, 2004
The DC Youth Orchestra will stage a special benefit performance at the Organization of American States (OAS) on Saturday, December 4, under the joint sponsorship of the OAS and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
This special concert, which begins at 7:00 p.m., is intended to honor the city of Washington D.C.—host to the OAS’ and the IDB’s headquarters—by celebrating the efforts, talent and artistry of youthful musicians who are a product of the DC Youth Orchestra Program.
Funds raised from the concert will go towards supporting the DC Youth Orchestra Program, one of the nation’s oldest after-school music programs that for the past 44 years has served as a training ground for more than 50,000 students from the Washington area, a significant number of whom have gone on to professional musical careers. The Program is a private-public partnership increasingly dependent on private donations.
Among the personalities expected to attend are OAS’ Acting Secretary General, Amb. Luigi Einaudi and IDB Vice President Enrique Iglesias’ representative Mirna Lievano de Marques; Virginia Williams, mother of Washington DC Mayor Anthony Williams; DC Council members Jack Evans and Adrian Fenty; and members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of cultural foundations in Washington, DC.
