  March 19, 2013

The Inter-American Committee on Culture will bring together experts from the Member States of the Organization of American States (OAS) and representatives of other international organizations on March 21 and 22 at the headquarters of the hemispheric organization in Washington, DC, to discuss and plan joint actions.

During the Fifth Regular Meeting of the CIC, to which 17 representatives from ministries and national institutes of culture have confirmed their attendance to this point, participants will discuss issues related to public and private financing of culture; measurement of the contribution of creative and cultural industries to the economy of the region; and the importance of cultural patrimony, arts and technology to integral development. During the meeting the initial results of the study “The Economic Impact of Cultural and Creative Industries of the Americas,” will be presented. The study was commissioned by the OAS, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the British Council, to the consulting firm Oxford Economics.

In addition, CIC members will hear information about the proposed Plan of Action of the Social Charter of the Americas in the area of culture; the progress and plans for projects and activities in the framework of the Work Plan of the CIC; and will discuss issues related to the Sixth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and Senior Authorities of Culture, to take place in 2014.
